My first full day in New Mexico was a real treat! Blair splurged and treated me to a ride on the World's Longest Tramway. Apparently, it's a must when visiting Albuquerque. Blair hadn't been on it either, so it was a new, and fun, experience for both of us!
Thought this crossing sign was funny. Were they afraid that the tram would hit a car that's at least a story below it?
Waiting for our ride. We were on flight #17.
Here it comes!
Us while riding the tram. We were 1000 feet above the ground (or, about an 8 second drop if we fell).
This is called the fish rock. Can you see it? It really did look like a fish!
Awesome view of Albuquerque! Still on the tram.
The tram ride took about 13 minutes. It's 2.7 miles long, and we went from elevation 6,559 to 10,378 feet.
It was 73 degrees at our car. At the top of the mountain it was 48 degrees. There was still a little bit of snow on the mountain side!
We ate lunch at the restaurant on the top.
In the winter, the other side of the mountain is used for skiing. Blair skied it last winter and couldn't believe how different it looked with grass instead of snow.
Several hiking trails met up at the top. We are thinking about doing the La Luz trail sometime. Blair wants to hike the whole thing. I'm thinking of taking the tram to the top and hiking down the trail instead of hiking up and back down. Seeing as how it is ranked as a strenuous 8 mile hike each way, I think I'm the smart one. :)
The restaurant on top. So cool
Yes, mom. We went on the cliff ledge. But don't worry, we were very careful. And we didn't go anywhere we weren't allowed. :)
It was soooo windy at the top!
It was cold and windy up there, especially in shorts and flip flops. But it was still romantic. Awww. :)
I didn't know the meaning behind the New Mexico flag symbol. Thought it was pretty interesting.
After lunch and the tram, we had a hankering for sweet tea. So we made a detour to Cracker Barrel, ordered two sweet teas to go, and sat out front for about an hour playing one slightly intense game of checkers.
Blair was so cute as he was figuring out the strategy for his next move because I "put him in a pickle".
But I won. :)
I can't see the fish!!!!! But I agree that hiking DOWN is the smart thing to do. Especially with the altitude change, it would be rough. Great pictures! Happy Birthday, Blair!
